CHAPTER 27

JUST ONE LOOK

I finally felt like I was moving forward when my brother-in-law’s company hired me. I knew I could do the work. My looks were deceiving because I was smaller than some of the burly guys there. I was only five ten and 168 pounds, but that was all muscle, and I could hold my own. Some of the other guys were actually surprised at how much I could lift.

The interesting part of this job was that we would work during the day doing residential moves, then, after five o’clock, we could do commercial work in the high-rise offices in the city of Chicago. Even though we sometimes worked twelve- to fifteen-hour days, I was not as tired after work as I’d been after working at U-Haul for eight to ten hours with all the third- and fourth-floor carries. But it still took a toll on my body, some days worse than others. A couple of times, I traveled with some of the long-haul drivers. This was great because I got to see the country. As the helper and not the driver, the money was terrible, but it was a good experience.

One particular haul to the West Coast via the southern states was memorable. It was the beginning of spring, and there was still a chill in the air and patches of snow on the ground along a lot of the route. We stopped in Flagstaff, Arizona, to eat dinner on our second night out. It was a family-type place just off the interstate. A few tables away was a mom and dad and a couple of children. One of the kids was a girl who was maybe twenty, twenty-two. I was fixated on her. She was cute, with blonde hair and glasses. She was happily enjoying her meal and talking to her parents. I couldn’t make out what they were saying, but once in a while, one or all of them would laugh out loud. She was still like a kid in some ways, but she was an adult and her parents seemed to accept her as an adult. Her being with her parents at that age made me wonder what my life would have been like if that had been my family.

I wondered what this girl was about, where she lived, if I would ever see her again. When their dishes were cleared, Dad laid a map out on the table. Looked like they were on vacation.

The girl must have felt me staring at her, because she lifted her head and looked toward me. Our eyes meet for the first time, and I sensed I knew this girl. What made me feel like I knew this girl before? Was she a soul mate? I was two thousand miles from home. I didn’t know anyone out here. I snapped out of the trance I was in and went on eating with my partner. I never gave it another thought.

My body was paying the price for the hard labor I was doing, but I didn’t care.
